Have you ever wondered why your laptop battery doesn’t seem to be lasting as long as it was when you originally bought it? It’s inevitable, as your laptop battery gets older and is constantly being charged and drained, it will weaken and lose its capacity. Now there doesn’t seem to be any obvious feature in Windows 7 which displays your batteries health. However, there is, you just need to know where to go to find it. And that’s just what I’ll show you in this guide.
1. First off you’ll need to open up a command prompt window. You’ll need to run this as the administrator, otherwise it won’t work. To do this, type cmd into the start menu, then right click on cmd and choose Run as Administrator
2. Now that your command prompt window is open, you’ll need to type the following
powercfg -energy
and then hit enter.
3. You’ll then be presented with the below screen. Just hang in there for 60 seconds while Windows does some tests.
4. Once Windows has performed these tests, you’ll see the following appear (or similar)
5. Now the line that I’ve highlighted in yellow above is what you need to take note of. Navigate to that file and then open it up. ( Note: If you search for energy-report.html in your system32 folder you have to copy it to the desktop first then open it otherwise you won’t be able to open it)
6. Now that the HTML file is open, scroll right down to the bottom and it’s around the 5th last item.
Now you will be able to see all the information about your battery. Now the figures you’re interested here are the Design Capacity and Last Full Charge.
Design Capacity is the maximum charge your battery can hold. Basically what it was new.Last Full Charge is what you battery was able to hold last time it was fully charged. Chances are, this figure is now less than your design capacity figure if your laptop is more than a year old and you haven’t changed it’s battery since you bought it.
Now you’re probably looking at the screenshot above and saying “both those figures are the same”. Yes they certainly are, and I took this screenshot from the energy-report that was generated for my 2 year old laptop! I have no idea how my battery is still in perfect condition, or at least it is according to this report. When I think about it though, my battery doesn’t really last for any less time than it did when I bought it. I only get a miserably 1 hour to 1.5 hours from a full charge, that’s all I ever got
It’ll be interesting to see what your batteries are like, please do comment below with your results
